InitCap

A studio that sells what it builds

InitCap makes licensed software for everyday working life — the jobs people do at a keyboard every week and have no good tool for. We build one at a time, finish it, and sell it under a plain licence.

What we are for

Most software for this kind of work now arrives as a subscription to somebody else's servers. That is a fine arrangement until you need it to work on a locked-down laptop, or in a room with no internet, or five years from now when the company that sold it to you has moved on. We sell you a copy that runs on your own machine, and a licence that says so.

The first product, Meridian SCP, is for people who look after servers. The ones after it will not all be. What they will have in common is the shape: one job, done properly, bought once, running where you are.

How we build

No borrowed code in the product

The desktop application has no third-party packages at all. A tool trusted with production credentials should not carry a supply chain nobody has read.

Dangerous things start as a rehearsal

Anything that overwrites or deletes offers a dry run first, and says exactly what it would change before it is allowed to change it.

The screen tells the truth

If an email was not sent or a server could not be reached, it says that, in those words. Nothing reports success it did not have.

Secrets are treated as secrets

Saved passwords and keys are encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your own disk. Account passwords here are hashed with scrypt. Nothing is stored in the clear.

A licence you can verify offline

Licences are signed with an Ed25519 key that never touches this website. The application checks the signature itself, on your machine, at every start.

A record that cannot be quietly edited

The browser version keeps an append-only log of who connected where and what they moved, hash-chained so a removed line breaks the chain and is reported.
